Die beste Eigenschaft dieser Uhr, meiner Meinung nach, ist die sunray Ende auf dem Vorwahlknopf. Bei normaler Beleuchtung erscheint es mattschwarz, aber im Sonnenlicht wird es zu einem wechselnden Spiel von grau bis schwarz. Die Hände sind gut für das Zifferblatt und gut lesbar.

Bei etwas Licht, wie oben gesehen, verschwinden polierte Hände und in ihrer Abwesenheit sind die Lumenstreifen noch lesbar. Nicht schlecht.
Apropos lume:

Das ist ganz gut, obwohl die Lücken am 3/6/12 mich ein bisschen stören. Kein Problem, die Zeit nachts zu lesen, und kein Problem, das die Stunden- und 24-Stunden-Hände unterscheidet.

Am Handgelenk ist es eine vielseitige Uhr. Definitiv dressy, es ist eine, die ich für Geschäftsreisende empfehlen würde. Nicht zu schick, nicht zu schlicht, nicht zu teuer, das ist eine Uhr, die sagt, Sie schätzen Uhren aber nicht auf der Suche nach bling. Auf der Minus-Seite, 14.4mm ist dicker als ich für Kleid tragen, und macht es ein bisschen top-schwer.

Little hand on the hours, big hand on the minutes. Everyone knows that. Now, what if you only had a single hand on that watch? One-hand watches rely on an hour hand alone to indicate the time. Once you wrap your head around the concept and relax your notions of split-second (or even split-minute) time keeping, it starts to make sense. A long hour hand read against a detailed index will provide more than sufficient accuracy. How do you answer the question, "what time is it?" If you are likely to say "precisely 10:13 and an half" then maybe you should stick to a conventional watch. If you would say, "about a quarter after" then a one-hand watch might be for you. 

If you are ready to give one-handing a try, I have five suggestions.

Luch watches are made in Minsk, Belarus. They offer a very inexpensive one-hand model using a 15 jewel hand wound movement. The watch is 36mm wide with a 20mm strap. This is a no-frills piece: chrome played case, printed dial, no lume, and of course, only one hand. The 12-hour dial with its two digit numerals and single, needle-like hand give it the appearance of a mechanical instrument gauge. The chapter index is delineated in 5-minute increments. There are various case and color combinations available, but I would choose a silver case and white dial with the attractive Cyrillic logo. Luch does not sell watches directly from thier site, but new ones are easily found on eBay. Prices range from $47-$60, depending on style. 

Hong Kong boutique SquareStreet offers the Minuteman One Hand. The Miyota quartz movement is shielded inside a stainless steel pressure case, which is itself nestled in a 40mm, molded Mazzuchelli acetate (fancy plastic) case, giving the watch 30m water resistance and an attractive shiny shell. The dial has diminutive two digit numerals in a radial layout, presenting a wide expanse of negative space inside the dial that is broken only by the single hand and a date window at 4 o'clock. I like the off white dial in the lurid orange case with black NATO strap and black crown for $175. It just looks cool, probably because it was designed by David Ericsson of Void Watches and Alexis Holm of Gram Shoes. 

Slow Watches produces just a single model, the Slow Jo 24-hour one hand. This Swiss made watch uses a Ronda Caliber 505.24H GMT movement, stripped of 3 of its four hands. The 24-hour index is marked in 15-minute increments and positions the numerals at the outermost edge of the dial. The chunky stainless steel case is 38mm square with chamfered edges and cut corners, creating a roughly octagonal shape. It is a solid looking piece, backed up by 100m water resistance. It is available in brushed, black, or gold cases with black, silver, or cream dials, and a number of strap and bracelet combinations. Try the $260 black on black on vintage brown

German watchmaker, Botta Design, has a full line of single hand watches. The UNO 24 Neo models are lovely little units, just 40mm wide and a scant 6.8mm thick with small lugs on slim calfskin straps. The index is angled down towards the dial, creating a slightly dished effect. The dial exhibits typical one-handed minimalism, but with splashes of color at the center and one-quarter positions on the face. The hand is a slender needle with a broad tail. Most intriguingly, the dial is shaded differently from top to bottom, to indicate day and night. A date window appears at the 6 o'clock position, which is actually 0 or midnight on this dial. The Time Bum's choice? The black/green Special Edition going for $450 at Twisted Time.

Ickler designed Defaktos like the Inkognito Afterglow One Hand Automatic12-hour one hander for a certain kind of watch nerd, but not for all of them. In the words of its designer, "my target was not the conservative watch enthusiast who gets pissed if the clock is late by one second every day." Perhaps ironically, it is powered by the highly accurate ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. The luminous white dial is bold and graphic with thick stick markers in 15-minute increments and no branding. Unlike the others, the hand is a broad, skeletonized pencil shape. It is 42mm wide with 50m water resistance, sapphire glass, and a display case back. Because there is nothing on the watch to indicate top or bottom, it can be worn on either wrist simply by reversing the position of the strap. You can buy direct for 460€, or US buyers can find them at Watchismo for $699.99.

New Crowd Funded Watches, Part 3

Ok guys, you need to slow down. It is getting mighty difficult for The Time Bum to keep up, but I will certainly try. Without further ado, here are three crowd funded watch projects that you need to check out and one that you really, really don't.

4th Dimension Watch 

"All those watches look the same." I hear this from watch nerds and non-watch nerds alike. Clearly, they haven't seen the 4th Dimension. The watch is a collaboration by 22 Design Studio of Taipei, and Los Angeles distributor MollaSpace. This bold concept piece features a dial unlike any other I have seen. It is a 1mm thick panel of high-density concrete molded to form 12 spiral steps on a lacquered copper back. Three brass stick hands bent at right angles sprout from its center and float above. I often talk about dials with depth, dimension, and texture, but this watch puts it in a whole new perspective. 

The lugless case is 42mm wide and 14.5mm thick, with a conical, brushed stainless steel bezel and a sapphire crystal. It houses a Miyota 2034 quartz. The brass crown is a hollow dodecagon. That's 12 sides and don't feel bad, I had to look it up too. Wrist shots show that it is every bit as tall as you might imagine, but this is a statement piece after all. Three models are offered: Original (grey with a natural strap), Urban (dark grey with black strap), and Midnight (black dial with a black case on a black strap). Early bird rewards are already sold out, but you can still get one for $290. Expected retail is $480. 

William L. Chronograph

For those who want something more traditional, newcomer William L. 1985 has just the thing. Guillaume Laidet fell in love with his grandfather's 1950's Swiss chronograph and set out to recreate that vintage charm in a modern watch. He has succeeded admirably. The watch is 40mm wide with a double domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal. A telemetre scale surrounds applied Arabic numerals and classic dauphine hands treated with SuperLuminova. Two variants are offered: white and rose gold, and black with stainless steel. Both feature the tasteful accent of a red index. 

Pledges start at €99 ($111) and top out at just €129 ($145) per watch. Of course, you cannot expect a mechanical movement at this price, but a Miyota 6S21 quartz does the trick. The William L. does not break new ground, but it flawlessly executes a time-honored classic. 

Don Kylne & Co.

You can't order from Don Kylne & Co. but keep an eye out as their debut watch is due to launch this month. It has a polished stainless steel, square cushion case in a very reasonable 40.5mm size. Before you dismiss this as too small, remember that this is a dress watch, and a square will wear one size larger than a round case of the same size. It is just over 13mm thick from the display case back to the domed sapphire crystal. Water resistance is 50m.

Italicized Arabic numbers are arranged in a radial pattern and the Miyota 8245 automatic movement places the small seconds dial at 4:30. The polished hands have a round base that flows into an undulating shaft and a pointed tip. A crocodile grain strap and signed butterfly deployant clasp finish it off. The effect is classy and quirky in a 1920's kind of way. Retail price is expected to be $450, pre-orders will start at $299, and buyers who want something really special can order one with a lovely floral engraving. Stay tuned. 

Umbrella X-Frame Vulcan

Umbrella (Resident Evil, anyone?) wanted to rid their watch of predictable curves and create a faceted design. To this extent, the X-Frame Vulcan succeeded. The large (45x55mm) hexagonal case displays sharp angles and imposing planes that flow into a segmented polyurethane strap. It sets the stage for a clean, sinister timepiece but then it goes right off the rails. A ten sided bezel with decorative "vents" makes perfect sense on this case, but the exposed fasteners are fussy and overdone. The same goes for the bolts through the massive crown guards and the bizarre left side "bumper" that inflates the already huge case to nearly 50mm wide. 

The dial is a disaster. A multi-layer honeycomb, undersized skeleton hands, ungainly text, and an incongruous open heart window fight for your attention. The movement is a Chinese PTS Resources dual time, but I suspect you will rely on the smaller secondary dial as your primary means of telling time, rather than trying to squint through the mess below.
